Slain over sex snub: Monster admits frenzied knife attack on Katy Rourke

A KNIFE maniac yesterday admitted he murdered his flatmate because she refused to have sex with him.
25-year-old Katy had landed her dream job just a fortnight earlier
Gary Stevenson, 27, throttled, battered, stabbed and slashed fashion buyer Katy Rourke, 25, in a frenzied attack.
He told cops he “lost control” after the bedroom snub in Glasgow, saying: “I stabbed her. I think it was three times.”
The hospital lab assistant’s confession came just hours after Katy’s body was found in their Govan flat.
The High Court in the city heard the former cruise ship worker, from Dundee, had only moved into the property two weeks before she was slain.
After Stevenson pled guilty to murder, judge Lady Rae deferred sentence until next month.
Detective Inspector Margaret-Ann May, who led the investigation, said Katy was a “bright, popular young woman with her whole life ahead of her”.
She added: “A through investigation led to Gary Stevenson admitting his guilt. I am glad this has spared Katy’s family the trauma of a trial.”
The judge heard how Stevenson confessed to cops he’d killed Katy then told them: “If it wasn’t her it would be someone else.”
The chilling admission came the day after he battered and knifed her.
The hospital lab assistant told officers: “I started to hit her and I didn’t stop. I just kept going and going and going.
“She started fighting back. That’s when I took a knife from the kitchen and used it to make sure she stopped moving. That’s it.
“I’ve never been in trouble for violence. But when I did lose control, it felt like there was nothing to stop me. There were no moral boundaries left in my life.”
Stevenson and Katy had spent the night before the murder last December drinking in their Govan flat, the judge was told.
He claimed they had consensual sex but when he woke Katy later she refused him because she said she had work in the morning.
He then launched his attack, thumping, choking, stabbing and slashing his helpless victim.

After the murder he blocked his front door with furniture then left the house by shimmying down a drainpipe.
He bought a knife, booze and painkillers and headed to North Berwick, East Lothian, where he phoned in the early hours for an ambulance, saying he had slashed his wrists.
He was treated in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for cuts and scratches — then arrested.
And it was while being driven back to Glasgow that Stevenson confessed to cops unprompted, telling them: “I want to tell the truth for the sake of the family.
“I need to give Katy’s family a chance to seek justice. I need to own up to it.”
‘I thank the family for their courage’
Katy’s naked body had been found hours earlier by horrified beat bobbies who were alerted by her worried pals.
A large kitchen knife was found lying on the bed beside her.
The ex-cruise ship worker, from Broughty Ferry, Dundee, had only moved into the flat two weeks earlier after landing her “dream job” with Glasgow-based fashion chain Quiz Clothing.
The court heard how Katy sent her friends a text at 1.20am on December 29. But she didn’t turn up for work the next morning.
The chums spent hours trying to contact her by phone. And her worried boss phoned Katy’s mum, who put an appeal on Facebook.

Pals Isla Porter, Emma Collumb and Claire Surgeoner then went to the flat and saw Katy’s car parked outside. But there was no answer at the front door.
Advocate depute Bruce Erroch said: “They went into the back garden and noticed a rear window was open and a light was on.
“They thought Katy must be in and phoned the police.”
But while waiting they saw two cops on patrol. One forced his way in and found Katy’s body face down on her bed.
Detective Inspector May added: “I would like to convey my sincere condolences to the Rourke family.
"What they’ve endured is incomprehensible. I must thank them for their strength and courage.”
